Decoding your genes - how much do you want to know?

To be delivered by
Laureate Professor Samuel F Berkovic AM

Director, Epilepsy Research Centre and Australia Fellow, Department of
Medicine (Austin Health/Northern Health)

The University of Melbourne

Genetic advances have revolutionized our understanding of many diseases.
In certain areas, genetics is now having a major impact on routine
medical care. A private citizen can now commercially obtain a sampling
of their genome for about $1,000.

Such testing will provide data about racial origin and claims to provide
information about personal risk for common diseases such as diabetes,
certain cancers, etc.

The importance to the individual of finding major genetic changes that
cause disease, versus subtle genetic variations that affect disease
risk, differs. In this lecture these differences will be explored and
the questions asked: How reliable is this information? Do we want to
know it?

6:30 - 7:30 pm
Monday 18 August 2008
